August is Black Business Month, and is a great reminder for us to shop Black-owned. Black businesses make up 10% of U.S. businesses and about 30% of all minority-owned businesses, which amounts to about two million companies being Black owned, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.


Nearly 60% of Black-owned businesses are women-owned, though men-owned businesses bring in two-thirds of the revenue.


Black businesses and creatives deserve more pub not just during August, but all year-round. That's why I would like to highlight a few I've had the pleasure of being connected to, listed by category.


Beauty & Makeup

She has experience doing weddings, fashion shows, photoshoots, proms, and has a youtube channel "Merabelle Beauty" (2017). Tiara Shepherd is a licensed esthetician and makeup artist.

She graduated from G Skin and Beauty Institute (2016). She has worked doing facials, medical skin treatments, retailing skin products, and skin mapping. She has been a makeup artist since 2013. She has experience doing weddings, photoshoots, television, and proms.

Harold’s Chicken - Harold Pierce, an African-American Chicago entrepreneur, founded Harold's Chicken in 1950. He started off by running a small restaurant with his wife, Hilda, on 39th Street. The name of the restaurant was H&H, and they specialized in dumplings and chicken feet. Gene Rosen, a friend who owned a poultry shop near by sold chicken to Pierce. The character of Harold's developed primarily out of necessity, because the larger fast food chains tended to avoid African-American neighborhoods. In turn, Chicago's legal and social obstacles to Black-owned businesses at the time prevented Harold's from expanding into downtown or the North Side. Harold's became one of the few examples of a thriving fast food chain that was owned by, and primarily served, the Black community.


Harold's chicken is cooked in a mix of half beef tallow and half vegetable oil, while some chains use only vegetable oil. This provides a taste that is more similar to the traditional home-cooked fried chicken that was invented in the American South.

Lorens Lens - Chicago Based Photographer who turns the people she loves into art and makes moments last forever.

Loren Toney is a published fine art and portrait photographer based in Chicago, Illinois. Finding her artistic footing in authentic emotion her portraiture is used in a wide array of spaces. From live music to behind the scenes photography she’s attuned to capturing the present moment. She was raised in the south suburbs of Chicago and received a BA from Columbia College Chicago as a Cinematography major and Photography minor.


Her work focuses on the complexities of interpersonal relationships and identity, particularly the experiences of Black men and women. She has been featured in “The Art Of Blackness,” exhibition in 2019 as well as Columbia College's Library for an installation entitled "The Americans Now".
